In BJJ, closed guard can be played with the guard player controlling one sleeve near the wrist, or the hand of their opponent with one hand, with their other hand grabbing the pants near the ankle.
The grips can be either on the same side of the opponent (controlling opponent’s right wrist and right ankle for example), or crossed (controlling opponent’s right ankle and left wrist.
This control provides many options to set up sweeps and submissions, while reducing opportunities for the opponent to pass the guard or land strikes.
