A dominant position in BJJ and other martial arts refers to a position in which one combatant maintains disproprtionate control over their opponent. Typically, the combatant maintaining the dominant position has access to submissions and to apply strikes.
Often, dominant positions are also pinning positions, which if performed in a contest setting may result in points being awarded to the contestant maintaining the position, or the conclusion of the match.
