masochism and sadism in hacker culture

0001-01-01

A common theme in the realm of hacking and cybersecurity-related endeavours is masochism.

Motivated attackers may exhibit masochistic traits when faced with problems and possess the abilities and temperament to impose their will on sitations that an otherwise reasonable person would not bother with.

Many articles and interviews highlight the protagonists masochism in a positive light. Other times, the author or interviewee will speak poorly on a person or group’s collective masochism when they possess intellectually superior methods.

sadism is also a prevalent theme in cybersecurity-related works. Often, operators on both attacking and defending sides of the equation take great pleasure in causing misfortune and harm to their adversaries. In short, hackers tend to be a bunch of assholes.
