GECOS

0001-01-01

GECOS is the fifth field in the /etc/passwd file, specifying information about the user such as their real name, address, phone number, etc.

Information in the GECOS field is not necessary for the system to run and is typically implemented for user experience purposes.

GECOS can be especially useful when a network has implemented finger services. This is rarely seen anymore, but is common on legacy devices and older Unix networks.
